

With over 70,000 students, the University of Central Florida is the state’s largest university. And with the 2024 election marking the first time many of these 70,000 students are eligible to vote, the campus absolutely buzzed with energy on election night. Live Oak Ballroom served as UCF’s official polling location. The sidewalks leading up to the building are lined with political yard signs emblazoned with slogans like “Vote No on 4” and “Yes on 3.”

The National Hurricane Center reported that the historic storm hit near Siesta Key as a Category 3, with 120 mph sustained winds at around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2024. Before reaching land, the storm made national headlines for its unprecedented speed in the Gulf of Mexico, intensifying from a tropical storm to a Category 5 in less than 24 hours. The National Weather Service confirmed 20 tornadoes and a record 126 tornado warnings issued across Florida on the day of impact. As of Oct. 11, CBS News reported 17 deaths related to the storm.
